Ingredients (Serves 4 – 5)
1. Breadfruit / Sheema chakka – 1/2 kg, cut into medium cubes
Onion – 1 small, cubed
Green chilly – 1, slit
Coconut tidbits / thenga kothu – 1/4 cup
Turmeric powder – 1/4 – 1/2 tsp
Chilly powder – 2 – 2.5 tsp
Coriander powder – 2.5 tsp
Fennel powder / garam masala – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 – 2 sprigs
Salt – To taste
2. Coconut milk – 1/2 cup (Optional)
3. Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Dry red chillies – 2
Curry leaves – A few
Pearl onions – 3 – 4
Method
1. Cook all the ingredients numbered 1 in a pan adding about 1 cup water. Cook until the bread fruit is done and the water evaporates completely. Bring down the heat and add 1/2 cup thick coconut milk. Taste check for salt and masala. Cook covered for 2 – 3 minutes and switch off.
2. Heat oil in a small pan. Splutter mustard seeds and fry dry red chillies. Add curry leaves and pearl onions. Saute until pearl onions turn golden. Pour over the curry. Close with a lid for 10 minutes. Mix well and serve with rice / chapatis.
