Broken Wheat Porridge/ Nurukku Gothambu Kanji
Gothambu Kanji Recipe
Ingredients (Serves 4 – 5)
Broken wheat / cracked wheat / nurukku gothambu – 1 cup
Water – As required
Salt – To taste
Grated coconut – 1/2 cup or as required to taste
Coconut milk, medium thick – 3 – 4 tbsp (optional)
1. Rinse the the broken wheat well. ( You can soak it for 1 – 2 hrs in enough water
to reduce the cooking time)
2. in a vessel, add broken wheat, little salt and enough water. Cover and cook until soft and done, takes about 20 – 30 minutes (you can pressure cook it for 1 – 2 whistles instead). Add grated coconut, coconut milk (optional) and salt, to taste. Serve hot with packle and pappad. We had it with lemon pickle, chammanthi and kaya-achinga payar thoran.
You can adjust the consistency of this dish by adding more water or coconut milk. I like to have a medium thick consistency. You can also adda pinch of cumin powder or 1/2 tsp ghee, if you prefer. Or for an extra taste, you can top it with fried pearl onions (2 – 3 thinly sliced pearl onions fried in coconut oil / ghee).
You can pair this along with cherupayar/ van payar ularthu, pickles, any mezhukkupuratti, thoran etc. But it tastes great on its own. Please do give this a try..its healthy and delicious!!
