Nellikka Thayiru Recipe
Ingredients (Serves 3 – 4)
1. Brined gooseberries / uppilitta nellikka – 2 – 3 large, pitted and roughly chopped
(You can use steamed/boiled gooseberries instead)
2. Yoghurt – 1/2 cup or as required
Salt – To taste
To season
3. Coconut oil – 2 – 3 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Dried red chilly – 1 – 2, broken
Shallots – 2 small, thinly sliced
Green chilies – 1-2, sliced into thin rounds
Ginger – 1/4 – 1/2 tsp, thinly sliced
Curry leaves – A few
Chilly powder – 1/4 tsp
Method
1. In a small bowl, combine chopped gooseberries, yoghurt and salt, to taste.
2. Heat 2 – 3 tsp coconut oil in a small pan. Splutter mustard seeds and fry dried red chilies for a few seconds. Next fry sliced shallots nd green chilies. When shallots turns golden, add ginger and curry leaves. Stir for 10 – 15 seconds and then add chilly powder. Give it a stir and immediately pour this seasoning over the raita. Cover with a lid for 10 minutes. Mix well. Set aside for 30 minutes. Serve with rice and other side-dishes.
i was searching for gooseberry for a long time. where did you get gooseberry from in seattle, maya ?
I used frozen goose berries for this recipe..its available in most of the indian stores here
