Gooseberry Raita

Goose berry Raita

Ingredients (Serves 3 – 4)

1. Brined gooseberries / uppilitta nellikka – 2  – 3 large, pitted an droughly chopped

(You can use steamed/boiled gooseberries instead)

2. Yoghurt – 3/4 cup or as required

Salt – To taste

To season

3. Coconut oil – 2 – 3 tsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Dried red chilly – 1 – 2, broken

Shallots – 2 small, thinly sliced

Garlic – 1 small, finely chopped

Green chilly – 1, sliced into thin rounds

Ginger – 1/4 – 1/2 tsp, finely chopped

Curry leaves – A few

Chilly powder – 1/4 tsp


1. In a small bowl, combine chopped gooseberries, yoghurt and salt, to taste.

2. Heat 2 – 3 tsp coconut oil in a small pan. Splutter mustard seeds and fry dried red chilies until brown. Next fry sliced shallots, garlic and green chilly. When shallots turns golden, add ginger and curry leaves. Stir for 30 seconds and then add chilly powder. Give it a stir and immediately pour this seasoning over the raita. Cover with a lid for 10 minutes. Mix well. Set aside for 30 minutes. Serve with rice and other side-dishes.
