Ingredients (Serves 5)
1. Masoor dal – 1/4 cup
Toor dal – 1/4 cup
Chana dal – 1/4 cup (Soak chana dal in enough water for 1 hour)
Mung dal – 3 tbsp
2. Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Onion – 1/4 cup, chopped
Garlic – 3 cloves, finely chopped
Tomato – 1 medium, chopped
Green chilies – 1 – 2, slit
Water – As required
3. Kasoori methi – 1/2 tsp
Cilantro – 3 tbsp, finely chopped
To season
4. Ghee – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Dried red chilies – 1, broken
Hing / asafoetida – 1 pinch
Chilly powder – 1 pinch
Method
1. Pressure-cook the mixed dals, turmeric powder, chopped onion, garlic, tomato, green chilies and enough water (around 1.5 cup or as required) for 3 – 4 whistles. Open the cooker after 10 minutes. Add around 1.5 cup hot water and enough salt, to taste. Bring to a boil and cook for a few minutes. Add kasoori methi, mix well and switch off.
2. Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a small pan at medium heat. Splutter mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Fry dry red chilies and add a pinch of hing and chilly powder. Stir for a second and switch off. Pour this seasoning over the prepared dal. Mixed dal tadka is ready to serve! Sprinkle cilantro and serve hot with chapathis / cumin rice/plain rice.
what about d garlic?
You need to pressure cook the minced garlic along with ingredients 1 and 2. I have updated the recipe. Thanks!
