Ingredients (Serves 3)
1. Vazhakka / banana saba – 2 (You can use raw ethakka instead)
2. Oil – 1 tbsp
3. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Dried red chilies- 2, broken
Curry leaves – A few
4. Urad dal – 1 tsp
5. Turmeric powder – 1/2tsp
Green chilies – 1 – 2, slit
Hing – 1 pinch (optional)
6. Salt – To taste
7. Grated coconut – 1/4 cup
Method
1. Boil water in a sauce pan. Halve the plantains and add to the boiling water. Cook for 4 – 5 minutes(do not over cook). Take them out. When warm enough to handle, peel off the plantain skin and grate using a grater with big holes.
2. Heat oil in a pan at medium heat. Splutter mustard seeds and fry dry red chilies and curry leaves. Next fry urad dal until brown. Add grated plantain, turmeric powder, hing and enough salt. Mix well. Cook for 4 – 5 minutes until it is done. Sprinkle grated coconut and mix well. You can sprinkle a little lemon juice, if you want. Serve hot with rice.
