Chow chow poriyal

A simple and delicious dish that goes well with rice..

Chow Chow Poriyal Recipe

Ingredients(Serves 4 – 5)

1. Chow chow / chayote squash – 3, peeled and chopped

2. Oil – 2 – 3 tsp

3. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

    Urad dal – 3/4 tsp

    Dried red chilies – 2, broken

    Curry leaves – A few

4. Green chilies – 2, slit

5. Salt – To taste

6. Grated coconut – 3 tbsp


Heat oil at medium-high heat. Splutter mustard seeds and fry urad dal, dried red chilies and curry leaves. Next add chopped chow chow, green chilies, salt and mix well. Bring down the heat to medium-low. Cook covered for 6 – 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Open the lid and stir for a few minutes until the moisture evaporates completely and its done. Add grated coconut. Mix well and switch off. Serve chow chow poriyal with rice and other side-dishes.
