Cherupayar ularthu

Ingredients (Serves 4 – 5)

1. Cherupayar / green gram – 1 cup, dried

2. Pearl onions – 4 – 5

3. Garlic – 3 – 4 cloves

    Black pepper corns – 1/4 – 1/2 tsp

4. Curry leaves – 1 sprig

5. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

6. Crushed red chilies – 1/4 tsp

    Curry leaves – 1 sprig

7. Salt – To taste

8. Oil – 1 tbsp

Method

1. Pressure-cook green gram adding around 1 – 1.5 cups of water and little salt, until done.

2. Crush pearl onions, garlic and black pepper in a mortar and pestle.

3. Heat oil in a cheena chatti / any pan. Splutter mustard seeds and fry crushed chilies and curry leaves for a few seconds. Add crushed mixture and fry for 1 few minutes until their raw smell is gone. Add cooked cherupayar, and stir fry for a few minutes. Serve warm with rice.

    • Thanks Rubiya 🙂 I usually cook green gram in a pressure cooker for 1 whistle. You can try using a regular vessel instead of pressure cooker to cook it. Just drain the excess water after the green gram is done.

    • Before adding water in pressurecooker, switch on the stove and stir gram in the pressure cooker itself for 20-30 secs. Make sure the gram is not fried completely. Then add water and pressure cook it.

  • I hope you are from kottayam ( guesswork – seeing the fish curry)Do we need to add grated coconut in this. I’m from kottayam and we usually don’t add.. But my husband doesn’t agree with me .. Lol
