Ingredients (Serves 6 – 8)
1. Broccoli – 2.5 – 3 cups, chopped
2. Toor dal / thuvara parippu – 1/2 cup
Turmeric powder – 1 pinch
Water – 1/2 – 3/4 cup or as required
3. Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
Pearl onions – 3
Green chilies – 3
Cumin seeds – 1 pinch
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
4. Salt – To taste
5. Coconut oil – 2 tsp
6. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Dried red chilies- 2
Curry leaves – A few
Method
1. Place toor dal, turmeric powder and enough water (1/2 – 3/4 cup) in a vessel. Cook covered until water is completely evaporated and dal turns tender (do not overcook).
2. Crush the pearl onions, green chilies and cumin seeds in a mortar and pestle. Combine it with grated coconut and turmeric powder. Set aside.
3. Heat oil in a deep pan/ cheena chatti. Splutter mustard seeds and fry dried red chilies and curry leaves. Add chopped broccoli, grated coconut mixture and cooked toor dal. Add enough salt and mix well. Cook covered for 4 – 5 minutes until broccoli gets cooked. Switch off. Serve with rice and any side-dishes.
