Gothambu Kanji

Gothambu Kanji Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4 – 5)

Broken wheat / cracked wheat / nurukku gothambu – 1 cup

Water – As required

Salt – To taste

Grated coconut – 1/2 cup or as required to taste

Coconut milk, medium thick – 3 – 4  tbsp (optional)

Method

1. Rinse the the broken wheat well. ( You can soak it for 1 – 2 hrs in enough water

to reduce the cooking time)

2. in a vessel, add broken wheat, little salt and enough water. Cover and cook until soft and done, takes about 20 – 30 minutes (you can pressure cook it for 1 – 2 whistles (adding about 1.5 cup water) instead). Add grated coconut, coconut milk (optional) and salt, to taste. Serve hot with packle and pappad. We had it with lemon pickle, chammanthi and kaya-achinga payar thoran.

Tip

You can adjust the consistency of this dish by adding more water or coconut milk. I like to have a medium thick consistency. You can also adda pinch of cumin powder or 1/2 tsp ghee, if you prefer. Or for an extra taste, you can top it with fried pearl onions (2 – 3 thinly sliced pearl onions fried in coconut oil / ghee).

You can pair this along with cherupayar/ van payar ularthu, pickles, any mezhukkupuratti, thoran etc. But it tastes great on its own. Please do give this a try..its healthy and delicious!!
