Ingredients (Serves 4)
- Toor dal – 3/4 cup (Soaked in enough water for 6 – 8 hrs)
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Ginger – 3/4 tsp, finely chopped
Green chilies – 2, diagonally sliced
Curry leaves – A few
Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
Water – 1/2 – 1 cup or as required

4. Shallots – 6 – 8, crushed in a mortar and pestle
Garlic – 3 small, crushed
5. Crushed red chili flakes – 1 tsp or to taste
6. Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Method
- Cover and cook all the ingredients numbered 1 in a kadai. Stir occasionally and add hot water, if required. Cook till toor dal is done, slightly mashed up and water is evaporated completely. Add salt, to taste and mix well.
- Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add crushed shallots, garlic, curry leaves and cook till they turn light golden. Add crushed chili flakes and cook for 30 seconds. Add cooked dal and mix well. Taste-check for salt. Cook over low heat for 1 – 2 minutes and switch off. Serve with puttu, pappadam and egg curry or with plain rice and other side-dishes.
