Chemmeen Peera Pattichathu

Ingredients (Serves 5)

1. Chemmeen / prawns – 300 –  400 gm, cleaned (I used medium sized prawns)

2. Grated coconut – 1.5 – 2 cups

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Chilly powder – 1/2 tsp

Shallots – 5 – 6, sliced

Ginger – 2 tsp, thinly sliced

Garlic – 1 tsp, chopped

Green chilies – 3 – 4, diagonally sliced

Curry leaves – 1 sprig

Salt – To taste

3. Kudam puli / gamboge – 2, soaked in enough water for 15 minutes

4. Coconut oil – 1 tbsp

Method

1. Combine all the ingredients numbered 2. Crush well with your fingers (njeruduka).

2. Add cleaned prawns, kudam puli, 1 – 2 tsp kudam puli water and mix well. Add 2 – 3 tbsp water. Cover and cook for 8 – 10 minutes, stirring in between, until prawns are completely done and moisture is mostly evaporated. Add a few curry leaves and 1 tbsp coconut oil. Keep covered for 10 minutes. Serve with plain rice.
