Sometimes I just wish I could turn time back, just to be at home, to be with my Mother, and be fed by my Mother. We belong to a family of foodies. For us, a meal is not good enough, if it fails to appease our tummy. We simply did not believe in eating just anything to fill our stomach. We needed good delicious food. And we loved variety. My Mom makes the yummiest of food. Be it vegetables, fish or meat, my Mom made everything so well and there would be a variety of dishes everyday for lunch. She always said that her birth star is Thiruvonam, and that means, her platter (because of her, ours too) would be full every day. There would always be many curries for lunch, like you are having a Sadya. Fish is something which is unavoidable for lunch, and her fish curries are famous! If you have tried my Fish curry recipes, almost all the recipes are hers or my MIL’s.
She hates cooking though. Unlike other Mothers who tell their girls to learn everything before their wedding, our Mom told us to go and study or do anything other than cooking, because she told us that once we got married, we would never be able to escape kitchen chores! The only thing that was expected from us was cleaning up. She loved to see her home spotless clean. When we ignored her demand to tidy our home, she used to threaten us that once we got married and had a place of our own, she would come and mess up our place!
To think that my Mother was a pukka vegetarian till she got married to my carnivorous father is unbelievable for many of my friends, as her non- veg dishes are lip smackingly yummilicious! She was introduced to the world of non-veg food by my Father who absolutely cannot eat rice without at least a dry fish by the side. And now, she even forgot the fact that she was a veggie. She makes the most amazing Chicken biryani. Another of her bestie is chuttaracha chammanthi, over which we siblings used to fight, as to who would get the major share!
She would almost always have something ready when we got back from school. Pazham pori was a regular snack. And she always made an ice cream for us with just milk, eggs, sugar and vanilla essence. I have to learn that recipe yet!
Ever since I started the blog, I wanted to have all my mom’s recipes in one page. This is what I have done today. I have blogged only about half of her yummy recipes. She learned all of these from her Mom and MIL. Most of the Kerala recipes that I have shared here are my mom’s and mom-in-law’s. So these are recipes passed down through generations. I will also soon share my mom-in-laws recipes here..
